Understanding Michigan
Few, if any, states in the union are in as bad an economic funk as Michigan. In fact, it's commonly said that Michigan is currently experiencing a one-state recession.
It's not all that surprising, therefore, that Wolverine State primary voters on the Republican side chose as their candidate Mitt Romney, an accomplished businessman who gained prominence for turning around the Salt Lake City Olympic Games in 2002 and for turning a large budget deficit into a surplus as governor of Massachusetts.
An interesting question to ponder, in light of this: As the economy continues to grow in importance as a campaign issue, not just in Michigan but nationwide, might this provide an advantage to Romney's campaign, given his demonstrated powers of economic/financial resuscitation?
